” It was crazy ” ; Dozens of looters ransacked Walnut Creek Nordstrom; 3 arrested – CBS San Francisco

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) – Dozens of looters stormed the Nordstrom store in downtown Walnut Creek on Saturday night, terrorizing shoppers, assaulting employees, snatching bags full of merchandise and ransacking shelves before fleeing into several vehicles waiting for them in the street.

Lt. Ryan Hibbs of Walnut Creek told KPIX that three people were in custody and more were wanted.

“Walnut Creek Police investigators are reviewing surveillance footage in an attempt to identify other suspects responsible for this brazen act,” authorities said in a press release Sunday morning.

Police began receiving calls from Nordstrom employees about the looting at around 9 p.m. He said about 80 people rushed into the store and started looting and smashing shelves.

Two employees were injured when assaulted and another was pepper sprayed by the suspects.

Video shot at the scene shows masked looters exiting the store, carrying bags and boxes, jumping into cars.

Dozens of police vehicles also intervened on the scene.

An 18-year-old Oakland man and two people from San Francisco, aged 30 and 32, were arrested. Police also seized a gun from one of the suspects.

The man was charged with robbery, possession of stolen property, conspiracy to commit burglary and possession of burglary tools. The woman was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.

Goods stolen during the looting and a firearm were recovered in their vehicle.

A third suspect was picked up on foot and arrested. He was also charged with robbery, possession of stolen property, conspiracy to commit burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Brett Barrette is one of the managers of PF Chang’s restaurant across from the Nordstrom store. He watched the chaos unfold.

“I probably saw 50 to 80 people like ski masks with crowbars, a bunch of guns,” he said. “They were pillaging the Nordstrom.”

“There were a lot of people,” he continued. “The police were arriving by plane. It was like a scene from a movie. It was crazy. “

Barrette was also concerned about the safety of diners in his restaurant. Many gathered around the windows to watch the looters flee.

“I had to start locking the front door,” he said. “Locking the rear door. You never know, they might come here. It was crazy… All the guests inside were worried. It was a scary scene for a while.
