Maamigili Airport has changed from a domestic airport to an international airport.
Maamigili Airport was developed and is managed by Villa Group, owned by prominent businessman and MP Gasim Ibrahim.
Speaking to AVAS, Villa Air director Abdulla Nashid said that after the company requested the upgrading of Maamigili Airport to an international airport on May 19, the company received the green light from the Civil Aviation Authority to modernize the airport. The authority also authorized the airline to add international routes.
Villa Air had planned to start flights between Male and Bangalore as soon as the ministry authorized international travel from Maamigili airport, and had hoped to launch the route on September 29. the service could not start as planned. However, the launch date will be announced within a week, Nashid said.
Villa Group had previously attempted to open Maamigili Airport for international flights and the permit to use the airport as an international airport was issued in 2013 under the chairmanship of former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. However, this decision was blocked by the administration of former President Abdul Yameen Abdul Gayyoom in 2015 by revoking the permit issued to the group. Nashid said that although the permit was canceled, work to upgrade the airport has not been halted and the airport has been developed further.
“Compared to before, our capacity has increased by 200%, and we now have a lounge and an arrival hall that can accommodate up to 120 passengers. We can open immediately as soon as we get the green light, ”Nashid said.
