Unusually cold temperatures grip the San Francisco Bay Area

A low pressure trough stationed over the Pacific Northwest pushed a cold air mass into the San Francisco Bay Area, and Monday morning temperatures were unusually cold for May, with many inland locations falling in the 1930s, the National Weather Service said.

A temperature gauge at Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa hit a low of 34 degrees early Monday morning.

Locations along the coast and waterfront remained in the 40s, and Half Moon Bay Airport hit a low of 41 degrees.

“We don’t usually see temperatures this cold in May,” Weather Services meteorologist Brooke Bingaman said. “We’ve been around 10 to 15 degrees cooler than normal in some places.”

The system to the north was also bringing “weak, stray showers” to the region, the weather service said. North Bay saw a few light splashes on Sunday, and more rain and a thunderstorm or two are possible Monday and Tuesday.

The chance of rain on Monday ranges from 20% to 45% in the North Bay and 15% to 20% in San Francisco, Bingaman said.

“Right now what we’re seeing are just very small pop-up showers off the coast,” said Bingaman, who works in the Monterey office. “They will have a chance to move slowly inland. Later in the afternoon we may see some splashes or light showers, but they will be intermittent and not widespread. There is a very low chance that some of these could turn into thunderstorms but if that happens the highest probability will be in North Bay If we get some of these thunderstorms the biggest risk besides lightning would be a little hail.

Wednesday marks the start of a warming trend as high pressure is expected to build over California bringing hot, dry weather. Indoor temperatures over the weekend are expected to rise into the 80s and 90s.
